Day 6. Monday – To Mohand Marg
Our trek continues on Tuesday to Mohand Marg, the glorious alpine meadow first discovered by Sir Aurel Stein in the summer of 1895. For next 45 years whenever he was in Kashmir, in and out from or to Central Asia, Europe and America, Stein always camped in the summers on this beloved Marg that he called as ‘ my own paradise resort’. Here Stein would walk amongst the mountains, picnic in groves of pine trees, pick flowers and write to his friends. Mohand Marg was his preferred retreat after the trials of his explorations and excavations. Nearly four years after Sir Aurel Stein’s death in Kabul in 1943, a memorial stone was erected at Mohand Marg on 15 August, 1947, the same day India and Pakistan were born as independent nation states marking the end of the British colonial rule in the sub-continent. As the Stein’s memorial stone has been badly damaged in the intervening years, we intend to erect a replacement and to suitably mark the occasion with all the members of the group as witness to the event perpetuating Sir Stein;s Kashmir legacy . We will spend the night in the great outdoors at Mohandmargs comfortable tented camp.
